Patronage of Saint James Lesser & Greater
When both St. James are discussed, they are referred to
as the "Lesser" and the "Greater". St. The
terms of "lesser" and "greater" do not signify
that one saint was more prominent than the other. James the Lesser
is only called as such because he became an apostle after St.
James the Greater.
St. James the Greater has many patrons, such as in Spain,
the pilgrimage is so wide-spread and popular that one of his emblems
is a symbol of pilgrims. In Spain there are many relics there
and the Spanish army used to ride into battle crying "Santiago",
which means Saint James. St. James the Greater is also a patron
saint against arthritis, and for blacksmiths, equestrians, horsemen,
laborers, soldiers, and veterinarians.
St. James the Lesser is seen holding a club, which symbolizes
him being martyred by being stoned and hit by a club. He is a
patron of many things as well, including hatmakers, pharmacists,
fullers, dying people, milliners, to name a few. The pharmacists
and fullers both use a club in their profession. St. James the
Lesser was very dedicated to prayer, so much that his knees were
as thick as a camel's hoofs.
